The Nigerian Defence Ministry, delegation   paid a visit to the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) on April 28, 2017. The delegation which comprised;  Air-Vice Marshal B.G Saidu(Air Force), Brig. Gen. N. Mbaka (Army), Brig. Gen. Victor Egbaleme(Army) and J. Shehu (Navy).

The defence delegation was received by the Director of Research and Studies, Professor Ogaba Oche, at the Institute Conference Chamber. The delegation had exchanged views with the Research Fellows on strengthening relations between NIIA and the Nigerian Defence Ministry and that they hold NIIA in high esteem. The delegation briefed the Director of Research and Studies about the history of Defense Headquarters, the role, duties and structure of the Ministry of Defence and accordingly the Defence Headquarters has the following Departments, namely, Policy Planning, Administration, Budget and Finance, Training and Development (manpower) Logistic procurement, statistics and Supply public Relations etc.  The above departments assist the Ministry of Defence in actualising its goals and objectives. The leader of the delegation said their Research Unit, is not robust like the NIIA, therefore the ministry would like to establish synergy and collaboration on national security matters, joint symposium and workshops with the Research and Studies Department of the NIIA, in order for them to have a more informed opinion as regards protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity, policy output and more informed analysis for both NIIA and Defence Headquarters.

The delegation called for a long term Memorandum of Understanding between the two Institutions. Earlier on, the Director of Research and Studies had briefed the delegation more on the role, objectives, establishment and how NIIA as an Institute is fairing. Research fellows present include; Dr. Bolarinwa, Dr.Ugwuanyi and Dr.Wapmuk. The Director of Research and Studies had also told the delegation  that they can always reach out to the NIIA through the Director General of the NIIA and through that the department would be informed as regards what to be done concerning the request. The visit ended with the vote of thanks by the Director of Research and Studies.
